Nedmag is working on an innovative project focused on cultivating seaweed on land, utilizing the pure saltwater streams from the factory in Veendam. This project addresses key sustainability themes within the protein transition, where seaweed, as one of the most protein-rich plants, can contribute to the growing demand for plant-based proteins.
Land-Based Seaweed Cultivation
For centuries, seaweed has been cultivated in the ocean, particularly in Asia. However, the unpredictability of the sea—such as fluctuating winds, temperatures, and currents—makes it challenging to control the cultivation process. As a result, there is growing interest in cultivating seaweed on land. Nedmag is exploring whether the magnesium- and calcium-rich saltwater left over from its production process in Veendam is suitable for this purpose. This water offers a stable temperature and composition, which presents clear advantages. Additionally, harvesting seaweed on land is easier and more efficient.
Creating Products with Seaweed
In addition to refining the cultivation methods, Nedmag is also exploring potential products that can be made with seaweed. These include food, animal feed, medicines, cosmetics, biofuel, and packaging materials. The saltwater from Nedmag, enriched with calcium and magnesium, could potentially enhance seaweed growth. It may even boost its protein content, making it more appealing for a variety of applications.
Rich in nutrients and sustainably cultivated, seaweed represents a promising addition to the future of global food security.
Collaboration with Partners
Nedmag is working with several partners to develop sustainable cultivation techniques and explore commercial applications. Key collaborators include the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and Seaweedland. The Seaweedcompany contributes to the commercial development of applications, while Husa Logistics facilitates large-scale testing. This project is part of the "Double Dike" program, which focuses on saline agriculture and is supported by EU subsidies and the SNN (Northern Netherlands Alliance).
