Marine scrubbers, or Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), remove sulphur oxides from exhaust gasses generated on vessels. MH53S Mare is the safe alkali to use on board. The product is non-dangerous, non-corrosive and therefore safe to use.
MH53S Mare for Exhaust Gas Cleaning systems
From 1 January 2020, the limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas is reduced to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass). There is an even stricter limit of 0.10% m/m in effect in emission control areas (ECAS) which have been established by IMO.
Compliance options
There are three options to comply to the new regulations; switch to ultra-low Sulphur fuel, switch to Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) or use an exhaust scrubber (or Exhaust Gas Cleaning system) to wash the exhaust gasses. An estimated 6% of the global fleet will use scrubbers by the end of 2020[1].
Types of exhaust scrubbers
Different scrubbing systems exist to clean the exhaust gasses. Wet scrubber systems are widely used and involve water to clean the gasses. Within this category, closed-loop and hybrid scrubbers require an alkali to remove Sulphur oxides. The safe alkali
MH53S Mare is the safe alkali to use on board. The product is non-dangerous, non-corrosive and therefore safe to use. By using MH53S Mare, the alkali consumption decreases by 30% compared to caustic soda, working positive on the overall economics.
